RED Komodo-X vs V-Raptor: Which to Rent?

Back to the blog

Komodo-X or V-Raptor: the short answer

Rent the RED Komodo-X when the shot needs a global shutter or light rig. It reads the whole Super 35 sensor at once, so whip pans, car rigs and strobes don't skew, and it weighs 1.19 kg body only, about 640 g less. Rent the RED V-Raptor 8K VV for VistaVision and 8K: up to 120 fps at 8K 17:9 in REDCODE LQ, or 60 fps in HQ and MQ.

This comparison covers the original V-Raptor 8K VV with Canon RF mount. Its rental listing is body only. Both cameras use Canon RF mounts and neither has built-in ND.

When to rent the RED Komodo-X

Rent the Komodo-X for global shutter: no skew on fast pans and car rigs, and no split frames under strobes. At 1.19 kg body only, it is about 640 g lighter than the V-Raptor, which counts on a gimbal or car mount.

Book a RED Komodo-X rental in Toronto if the shot moves fast or the rig is weight-limited.

When to rent the RED V-Raptor

RED calls the V-Raptor dual format: 8K VistaVision, or a 6K S35 crop when you want S35 glass or more speed (up to 160 fps in REDCODE MQ or LQ, 96 fps in HQ). Shooting 8K for a 4K delivery leaves room to reframe; two 12G-SDI outputs give focus and video village a feed each.

Book a RED V-Raptor rental in Toronto if you want VistaVision framing or both formats from one body.

Global shutter or VistaVision slow motion?

For a Toronto music video in full 8K, rent the V-Raptor for up to 120 fps in REDCODE LQ only. At 8K 17:9, HQ and MQ stop at 60 fps.

For more speed, use the V-Raptor's 6K S35 crop. At 6K 17:9, it records up to 160 fps in REDCODE MQ or LQ, or 96 fps in HQ, against the Komodo-X's 80 fps at 6K.

For whip pans and strobes, take the Komodo-X for its global shutter. It tops out at 4K 120 fps, with 6K up to 80 fps.

Build the rental around the body

  • Lenses: Full 8K needs glass that covers VistaVision; Super 35 lenses suit the Komodo-X and the V-Raptor's 6K S35 crop. PL cine primes mount with a PL-to-RF adapter such as the DZOFilm PL to Canon RF adapter. Browse cine lens rental in Toronto.
  • Media: the Komodo-X uses CFexpress Type B (2.0); the V-Raptor uses CFexpress Type B (2.0 or 4.0). Each has a single slot. Use a card from RED's tested list; each needs a minimum camera firmware.
  • Filtration: neither body has built-in ND.
  • Rental contents: The V-Raptor is listed body only. Plan power, monitoring, media and a card reader with your booking.
